Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Retires
Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer today announced that he has retired from football.
The 34-year-old Solskjaer had been battling knee injuries for the past four years, last season he made a goal scoring return to the side scoring 11 goals.
The baby faced assassin joined Manchester United from Molde for £1.5m in 1996 shortly after the club failed to sign Alan Shearer, who opted to join Newcastle United.
Despite being an unknown entity in this country, Solskjear proved to be arguably one of the best signings under the Alex Ferguson era, scoring 126 goals in 366 appearances, with the majority of those from the bench.
The highlight of Solskjaer’s career will always be the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich, capping United’s dramatic injury-time comeback.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was a true goal scorer, a predator in the box, arguably the best natural finisher of his era at his peak, scoring many a priceless goal for the club.
His loyalty to the cause was also unquestionable; he reportedly turned down several moves away from the club to contend for his place, a true professional which is regularly unheard of in the modern game.
His last game for the club was the FA Cup final defeat to Chelsea on 19 May when he came on as an extra-time substitute at Wembley.
Ole will remain at the club in a coaching and ambassador capacity, many fans are hoping that the former Norwegian international will have a testimonial match to celebrate 11 great years at Old Trafford.
