Man United 4 Derby County 1
Manchester United overcame a stubborn Derby County to move within just one point of current league leaders Arsenal.
United had to work hard for possession and to create chances against a side that has found a new work ethic and belief under new manager Paul Jewell. United indeed had to wait until the 35th minute before they got on the score sheet.
The goal scoring began with Ryan Giggs netting his 100th league goal in his career when he followed up Ronaldo’s shot to tap in from close range.
This was a great moment for the Welshman who has been symbolic of Manchester United in the Premier League. His ability and fitness has been questioned throughout his career, but one thing is certain, he will be fondly remembered as a true great of Man United’s history.
Argentine striker Carlos Tevez then scored twice, one from a Ronaldo free kick and a second thanks to an assist from Wes Brown.
United could have added more to their goal scoring tally but saw good efforts from Ryan Giggs and Carlos Tevez rebound off the goal frame.
Derby did spoil the mood slightly when striker Steve Howard bundled in a goal late on, which was the first time Derby have scored away in the league all season.
With the score at 3-1, Cristiano Ronaldo burst into the box and was brought down by Tyrone Mears. Cristiano dusted himself off and converted the penalty to make the final score 4-1.
